Toy Materials

With so many possibilities, how do I choose a toy?

We get it.  It’s hard to know exactly what toy is right for you until you’ve used it yourself.  This is a decision only you can make, but here are some questions to ask yourself that might help you narrow down the selection!  What types of colors and designs stand out to you?  Realistic designs, bright colors, or a sleek and modern look?  Are you drawn to soft silicone or smooth natural materials, like wood?  Do you want something that’s small and easy to tuck away or travel with, or is size not a limiting factor?  How do you think you will use a toy the most—externally, internally, or both?  Do you think you need a vibrator with a ton of different settings, or does simplicity appeal to you more?  And how much are you willing to spend?  Checking out lots of product reviews can help—there are reviews all over the Internet.  And, if you’ve used toys in the past, think about what you did and did not like about those.

Why are so many products made of silicone?

Because it’s great!  High quality, medical-grade silicone is non-toxic, non-porous, and easy to clean, so it’s very safe.  It is flexible but firm, and can come in a wide variety of textures, from rigid to soft.  You can get silicone in just about any color and it can be molded into a huge variety of designs.  It transmits vibration well, and it warms quickly to a comfortable temperature.  Plus, it’s durable and lasts a very long time!

I heard silicone products were cheap, but many of your silicone products cost more than I thought I’d have to spend. Why is that?

Unfortunately, many manufacturers produce cheap products that are labeled as silicone, but they are not actually 100% silicone.  These products may be easy on the wallet, but they are not safe because they’re not made of non-toxic, non-porous, medical grade silicone.  They are not worth the few dollars you’ll save because they could release toxins or fall apart after use.  Don’t worry though— at Bedside Boutique, all of our products are made of high quality silicone!

Are glass and wood products really safe?

Glass and wood are fantastic, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and attractive materials, so don’t be afraid to consider them!  All of our products are tested for safety.  Many people use glass and wood sex toys every day with no problems, and they won’t break or splinter under normal use.  However, you should always examine your glass or wood toys before using, just to make sure there are no cracks, fissures, or impurities in the material.  And, of course, take good care of your toys to ensure they have a long lifespan.

Toy Safety

What toys are safe to use anally?

If a toy is not designed and marketed for anal use, it should never be used anally.  Toys that are designed for anal use will have some sort of flared base to prevent them from becoming lost into the anal canal.  Never use toys anally if they aren’t designed for anal use, or you might find yourself on an embarrassing trip to the emergency room.

Sex Toy Care

Can I use my toy right out of the package?

We ALWAYS recommend cleaning toys right out of the package before the first use.  It’s possible that the product could have a residue left over from the manufacturing process, but give it a quick rinse and you’re good to go.  Any time you’re using something in an intimate area, you want to be certain that it’s clean.

How do I clean my toys?

It depends on the specific toy, but generally, a wipe-down with warm soapy water is all that’s needed.  Mild, unscented soap is best.  Special toy cleaning solutions are also available and work very well.

Fun Facts

When were sex toys invented?

Think only modern people stashed personal objects in their bedside tables?  Sex toys have been around for a very long time.  In fact, sex toys existed even before bedside tables were invented.  The first dildo ever found dates all the way back to the Paleolithic era!  We also know that the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, both men and women, used dildos for pleasure.  Of course, it wasn’t until the 20th century that we harnessed the power of electricity to create vibrators, and in the last few decades, technology has brought tons of innovation to the world of sex toys.  Now, the sky is the limit with the amount of materials, designs, and new technologies out there!  (Imagine what the Egyptians might think if they stumbled onto Bedside Boutique?!)
